Vietnam's first international piano competition started in Hanoi on Sunday night with 63 contestants from around the world.

The nine-day event, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Vietnam National Academy of Music, features 49 Vietnamese pianists as well as 14 others from countries including Japan, Korea and Russia.

After the opening ceremony on Sunday, the pianists began to compete on Monday in three categories split according to age - ten to 13, 14 to 17, and 18 to 25. The winners will receive a cash prize of up to US$2,000.

They perform for an international jury of seven members, chaired by Professor Tran Thu Ha of the Vietnam National Academy of Music.

Winners of the competition will perform once again for a local audience at a gala concert at the Hanoi Opera House on September 13.
