The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will join forces with the UCLA Film and Television Archive to screen 17 Vietnamese films in the US.

The event "New Voices from Vietnam" starts today and will run through to November 14 at the UCLA Film and Television Archive's Billy Wilder Theater in Los Angeles.

Selected films include documentaries, shorts and new feature films like Choi voi (Adrift), Canh dong bat tan (Floating lives), and Bi, dung so! (Bi, don't be afraid!)

There will also be a ceremony honoring director Dang Nhat Minh and discussions with visiting Vietnamese directors like Bui Thac Chuyen and Nguyen Vinh Son whose films will be screened at the event.

Ellen M. Harrington, public relations director of the event, said the directors will also visit major Hollywood studios and be introduced to new filming techniques.
