Nguyen Ngoc Quan and his team won the Moi buc anh Mot hanh dong photo contest, dedicated to promoting environmentalism, with an exhibition exposing the improvident use of plastic straws, Tuoi Tre reported.

Moi buc anh Mot hanh dong (One photo one action) is funded by Canon Vietnam and has been taking place for the past four months. It wrapped up early this week with a small ceremony.

Tuoi Tre quoted Quan as saying that the overuse of plastic straws has a negative impact the environment. His team's photos aimed to encourage local restaurants and vendors to reduce their unrestrained use of straws.

The Tien Khanh group finished second with their photo series entitled, "Your choice," which emphasized the power of the individual to make environmentally sound choices in their daily lives, according to the newspaper.

The jury presented a special award for creativity to the Tac Ke Bong group for their series: Con rung con mung (As long as we still have forests we are happy), Tuoi Tre said. The judges highly appreciated the group's use of humor in delivering their message, "Before cutting a tree, please plant a forest."

The award-winning photos will be printed in a book that also features images of local celebrities involved with the environmental campaign and contest. 500 books will be donated to Ho Chi Minh City high schools and universities.
