Vietnamese model Phan Hoang Thu will be fined VND15 million (US$713) for attending the Miss Tourism World late last year without the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s permission, Tuoi Tre Newspaper reported Friday.

Phan Hoang Thu did not meet criteria set by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for representing Vietnam at international pageants, which allows only those who placed in the top 3 at national beauty contests to join international events.

But late last year, on her own initiative, she attended the 2013 Miss Tourism World in Malaysia and was selected into the top six and won the Miss Southeast Asia award

Thu told Vietnamnet that after coming back home from the 2013 Asia Super Model in July, she was invited to attend in the 2013 Miss Tourism World, organized and hosted by Malaysia.

“I had only one week to prepare everything and go to Malaysia to attend the Miss Tourism and did not have enough time to ask for permission from Vietnamese authorities.”

Last year, as one of Viettnam’s two representatives at the 2013 Asia Super Model, Thu made it into the top eight at the contest that took place in China.

Thu said she is aware of her fault and accepted the fine.
