A museum detailing the history of Vietnamese merchant ships will be built in the central province of Quang Nam next year, the local Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said Saturday.

The museum will be built in the historic town of Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized as a unique example of a Southeast Asian trading port from the 15th to 19th centuries.

Merchant marine museums in France, Spain, Portugal and Japan will provide technical assistance to the museum's organizers.

Hoi An is already home to the popular General Museum, History Museum and Sa Huynh Culture Museum.
