A Ha Tinh man has donated an ivory feng shui compass to provincial authorities for study, a local official said Wednesday.

According to Ho Bach Khoa, deputy head of the Ha Tinh Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Heritage Management Division, the compass which dates back more than a century still works.

The device features Chinese characters and Vietnamese zodiac symbols, Khoa said, noting that four sides of the compass, are inscribed with icons representing the four seasons.

Khoa said the device was used to locate favorable sites in terms of feng shui to build houses, graves or determine the course of a stream.

Luong Huu Dung, the owner of the compass, said the item served as an indispensable tool when his grandfather when he was working in Binh Thuan province.

Currently the compass is in the hands of Ha Tinh Museum authorities who are studying it closely.
