A performance of ca tru an ancient genre of chamber music featuring female vocalists that originated in northern Vietnam will take place at 8 p.m. on June 13 at L'Espace in Hanoi.
According to a press release from the French cultural center, the music show will feature senior artisan Pho Thi Kim Duc and other performers, including Dang Cong Hung, Doan Thanh Binh, Nguyen Xuan Hoach, and Vu Ngoc.
Other participants are Professor Tran Bang, former director of Vietnam Cheo Theater and Professor Nguyen Thuy Loan.
"At the age of 82, Pho Thi Kim Duc's voice is in perfect condition," says the release.
Duc is one of the leading teachers of Vietnamese traditional music. Born to a family known for their artistic characteristic abilities, she learnt to sing from the age of seven and started to perform from the age of 13. She went on to become a famous Cheo performer for Voice of Vietnam.
After her retirement, she spent many years researching ca tru. She formulated lessons and compiled them into a book to pass on to the next generation.
Her methodology has made it easier for younger people to learn ca tru and preserve its beauty.
Ca tru is inscribed on the list of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2009.
L'Espace is located on 24 Trang Tien Street. Entrance is free.
