Local singer elected to represent Vietnam at MTV Europe Music Awards

After receiving 246,289 votes from fans throughout Vietnam, local singer Ho Ngoc Ha was elected Vietnam’s nominee for the South East Asia regional round of the annual MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMA), a representative from MTV Vietnam said Tuesday.

Ha beat six other local candidates for the honor.

A minor scandal flared up after MTV Thailand named Ha the local winner on September 9, a week before the voting results were released.

On Monday, a representative from MTV Vietnam said the scandal was only a “mistake” and denied rumors of foul play.

Ha, 30, is the mother of a 4-year old boy and the de facto wife of playboy and car collector Nguyen Quoc Cuong (AKA "Cuong Dollar"), the son of one of the richest women in Vietnam.

This marks the second year Vietnam will participate in the awards’ “Best Regional Act” category.

Last year, My Tam became the first Vietnamese artist to join the international competition after winning more than half of the 65,000 local fan votes.

Tam later won the “Best Regional Act” and only stopped at the “Best Continental Act,” which went to Chinese singer Lee Yuchun.

The winner of the "Best Regional Act" competes for the "Best Continental Act" and then "Best Global Act" before reaching the "Best Worldwide Act" competition, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland in November.

The "Best Worldwide Act" award was created in 2011 and is exclusive to Asian artists.
