The 3rd Zither Rendezvous will feature three leading traditional Vietnamese musicians at the Ho Chi Minh City's Labor Cultural House September 21 and 22.
The event's headliners are zitherists Hong Hanh from Hanoi, Hong Nga from the Hue Conservatory of Musics and HCMC's Nguyen Thi Hai Phuong, winner of the 1992 Vietnamese National Zither Competition.
In addition, the event will include performances by Japanese zither artist Toshiko Nagase and her son Kenzan Nagase, and members of the Taipei High School's zither band in Ho Chi Minh City.
A presentation by Vietnam's Professor Tran Van Khe, who is a renowned master of traditional Vietnamese music and an honorary member of the UNESCO's International Music Council, will also be a part of the event.
In Vietnam, the most commonly used traditional zither is the dan tranh, which is not dissimilar from the Japanese Koto zither played by the Nagase duo.
The September 21 show will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Labor Cultural House's Meeting-hall A. Invitations can be obtained at the palace, located at 55B Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, District 1. Tel: (08) 3 930 7512.
A workshop at 7 p.m. on September 22 will be held at professor Khe's residence at 32 Huynh Dinh Hai Street, Binh Thanh District.
Ho Chi Minh City plans to host the Asian Zither Festival at some point in the future. Plans had been laid to hold it here this year, but they were delayed due to lack of funding.
