Photos of the daily life of Vietnamese students and workers in East Germany will be exhibited in two different events in Hanoi this October.

"The birthday of Ly the Vietnamese in Dresden during the 1980s" shows a series of 32 black and white photos by Matthias Rietschel from Dresden, who is now working for the AP press agency.

The photos tell the story of people who have left their homeland to strike out in a new culture. The photos have been applauded as they tell the stories of these emigrants from an intimate, everyday perspective.

Meanwhile, representatives from Germany's Integrationsbeuftragten, an agency dealing with integration, will also tell the story of the lives of Vietnamese workers in Germany by presenting photos, labor contracts, reports, interviews and testimonies from the workers themselves.

The exhibitions coincide with the 35th anniversary of German-Vietnamese relations. Both governments have chosen to celebrate 2010 as the year of "Germany in Vietnam."
