French jazz to hit Vietnam southern hub

French jazz musician Franck Amsallem will perform at a March 10 concert organized by the Institute of Cultural Exchange with France, known better as IDECAF, and HCMC's Antenna of the French Institute in Vietnam.

Amsallem, a jazz pianist, singer and composer, has released eight CDs under his name. His sideman credits include some of the greatest names in jazz such as Gerry Mulligan, Charles Lloyd or Joshua Redman, also Maria Schneider and Harry Belafonte. He won the second prize at Jacksonville Great American Jazz Piano Competition in 1992.

He has performed at major festivals in Europe, South America, Africa and Asia, and has written for the National Jazz Orchestra of France, the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, and several symphony orchestras.

His recent tours include 23 concerts in Latin America, the Emirates, China, Algeria, Holland, Belgium, Israel, Portugal, and Peru.

His newest opus, "Amsallem Sings," features 12 songs from the Great American Songbook.

The musician will perform in HCMC at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 10 at IDECAF, 31 Thai Van Lung, District 1.

Entrance costs VND100,000 (US$4.80) each with 50 percent discount for students.
