The 5B Theater in Ho Chi Minh City will stage The Last 5 Years, a musical by American theater composer Jason Robert Brown, on May 11 and 12.
New York-born Brown, 42, is also a lyricist and playwright. His music sensibility fuses pop-rock with theatrical lyrics. An accomplished pianist, Brown has often served as music director, conductor, orchestrator, and pianist for his own productions.
The Last 5 Years premiered in Chicago in 2001 and was then produced off-Broadway in March 2002. Since then it has been staged numerous times both in the US and internationally.
The story explores a five-year relationship between a rising novelist and a struggling actress, according to the Dragonfly Theater Company (Vietnam), an English language theater in Ho Chi Minh City, and the International Choir and Orchestra of HCMC, the organizers.
They said in a press release that the play tells the actress' story in reverse chronological order (beginning with the end of the marriage) and the novelist's in a linear narrative.
