Deputy prime minister Nguyen Sinh Hung has asked the Ministry of Defense to prepare for 21 cannon shots to be fired on the main day of Hanoi's millennial anniversary on October 10.

The firing will take place at the Cot Co (Flag Tower) Stadium in Hanoi when people sing the national anthem at the nearby Ba Dinh Square.

Other cities and provinces are not to play drums, gongs or the like while people in Hanoi sing the anthem, march and parade on the morning of October 10, when Hanoi became the country's capital under the name of Thang Long a thousand years ago.

The Deputy PM's instructions ban any advertisement during the parade.

The birthday celebration will last for ten days from October 1, with a parade on the morning of October 10 and an evening of arts and cultural performances ending with a 20-30 minute firework extravaganza.

During the celebrations, there will be performances by national and international orchestras, a food festival, an ao dai fair and a kite flying festival.
