The Performing Arts Department has demanded an explanation from a married beauty queen and the company that sent her to an international pageant for unmarried women for lying about her marital status.
Hoan Vu Company, which holds the exclusive right to send Vietnamese representatives to international beauty contests, sent Luu Thi Diem Huong to Miss Universe 2012 after she won Miss Vietnam World 2010.
Nguyen Dang Chuong, head of the department at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, told Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper it would impose punishments after receiving responses from Huong and the company.
A source from Hoan Vu said the company would make an official statement once it clarifies the matter.
Chuong’s department in December 2012 approved the company’s proposal to send Huong to the contest, which said she, then a 22-year-old student, was the best choice for her contribution to society, especially charity events and campaigns.
But when her husband, an overseas Vietnamese businessman, recently filed for a divorce it was revealed that Huong had married in November 2011.
However, Huong has remained silent on the issue and hasn't commented publicly thus far.
