Vietnam's top striker Le Cong Vinh scored the first goal in Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA)’s 2-1 home win over Hai Phong at Vinh Stadium in the first round of the 2013 V-League season on Sunday.
It was his first match in his second stint with SLNA, his hometown club, after playing for Hanoi T&T from 2009 till 2011 and Hanoi FC (formerly Hanoi ACB) in 2012. Previously, Vinh had played for SLNA from 2004 till 2008.
After scoring the opener on Sunday, the 27-year-old Vinh joyously celebrated the goal with coach Nguyen Huu Thang and blew kisses to the home crowd to show how happy he was to be home.
When he was substituted in the final minutes of the match, the home fans rewarded him with a rapturous ovation.
Speaking to Thanh Nien after the game, Vinh said, “I’m really happy to have scored a goal in the first match on my return. I am grateful to the club managers, my teammates and the fans for their support.”
Vinh also said he would continue to make great efforts to not only make contributions to the club, but also to try to return to the national team.
“I’ve always been proud to be put on the national team, so I will do whatever it takes for a return,” Vinh said.
Van Quyen, another talent who became famous playing for SLNA and who now plays for The Vissai Ninh Binh, came off the bench midway through the second half and tried hard but failed to help his team avoid a 1-0 away loss to hosts Dong Nai on Sunday.
Defending champs Da Nang showed their strength by beating Kien Giang 2-0 at Chi Lang Stadium.
In early matches on Saturday, Hanoi T&T beat Hoang Anh Gia Lai 2-0 while Dong Tam Long An tied Thanh Hoa 1-1 and Xuan Thanh Sai Gon defeated Binh Duong 1-0.
