Police in the southern province of Dong Nai have detained a woman after she was caught attempting to sell a nine-month-old boy to China.
They said Le Thi Mo, 32, kidnapped the baby on January 29 from a store where she regularly delivered tissue, after baby’s mother Le Thi Long, had asked her to watch the baby for moment.
Local police were contacted immediately, but Mo had already fled the province for the north. Dong Nai police found evidence that the woman had entered Thanh Hoa Province, outside Hanoi, but that by that point she had moved on to Hai Phong in Quang Ninh Province, which borders China.
Dong Nai police and Quang Ninh border guards caught Mo the morning of February 1, as she was waiting to hand over the baby to a buyer.
Mo said she planned to sell the baby to a Vietnamese woman in China for VND20 million (US$960) in order to pay for her trip to Thanh Hoa for the Lunar New Year’s festival.
