A court in the southern province of Tay Ninh has sentenced a Chinese man to death for smuggling more than 1.3 kilograms of heroin.
Zhu Yin Xiang, 58, was caught by local police last August carrying the heroin from Cambodia.
Xiang told investigators he was hired on the phone by a Chinese-speaking man whose name and address he did not know. The deal was made just one day earlier, with Xiang being promised US$400 to transport the heroin to a Ho Chi Minh City train station neighboring Tay Ninh Province.
Xiang said he had been living in Cambodia since 2011 after failing to find a stable job in China, and that the man must have noticed him frequenting Cambodian casinos.
Vietnam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
The production or sale of 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics is also punishable by death.
