A court in Hanoi has handed down prison sentences to two Malaysians and one Chinese for using fake credit cards to cheat local shops out of nearly VND160 million (US$7,622).
Saw Wei Loon, Soon Kok Loon, and Yan Qiuan, who were identified as members of a ring led by a person in Malaysia, were convicted of “depriving property” by using fake cards to buy goods at shops in Hanoi on three different occasions last year.
They were not busted until February 7, 2012 when attempting to purchase one iPad2, and one iPhone 4S at an electronics shop on Nguyen Du Street in Hai Ba Trung District.
A shop employee suspected that they were using fake cards and called the police, who arrived soon after and arrested all three foreigners.
Police later found 13 fake credit cards, six cell phones, and three tablets from the foreigners.
Soon and Saw, both Malaysians, received five-year sentences, while Yan was given four years.
