Vietnam’s chess ace Le Quang Liem has climbed to the top of the 2013 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess masters event after a win against Spain’s Ivan Salgado Lopez Thursday local time.
The fourth consecutive win has pushed 8th-seeded Liem into first place with four points.
The globally 39th-ranked Grandmaster Liem, elo 2705, launched relentless attacks and beat Lopez, elo 2606, after 42 moves.
The 21-year-old Liem will next play against Venezuelan Grandmaster Eduardo Iturrizaga, who has an elo rating of 2650.
In other action, Vietnam’s second best GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son drew with Filipino rival Laylo Darwin at the fifth round of the Asian Zonal 3.3 Chess Championships (World Cup qualifier) in the Philippines.
The Philippines’ No.1 So Wesley, standing 66th in the World Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings, beat Mongolian competitor Bayarsaikhan.
The fifth round win took So Wesley to first place with 4.5 points while Truong Son is second with 0.5 point less.
In the women’s event, Nguyen Thi Thanh An is still on top after beating compatriot Pham Le Thao Nguyen in the fifth round. An now has 4.5 points, 1 point ahead of second-placed Mongolian Munguntuul Batkhuyag.
