Coast guards in the south central province of Binh Thuan have asked the provincial and central governments to demand that Indonesian authorities release three captured fishing boats.
While taking refuge from rough seas, the Vietnamese vessels, along with 23 sailors, were captured by the Indonesian Coast Guard on January 8, the Binh Thuan Coast Guard said in its letter to the provincial government, asking it to inform the Foreign Ministry and the National Committee for Search and Rescue.
Phone calls from the crew members said they were held against their will and had their personal papers seized by the coast guards immediately upon arriving at Indonesia’s Natuna Island.
The boats departed from Vietnam’s southern province of Bac Lieu in late December.
